LIMA Nothing seems to say October like a pumpkin. These round, orange seasonal squashes brighten a fall display of dried corn stalks and electric-yellow chrysanthemums and enliven Halloween night when carved into grinning jack-o -lanterns. The area s grocery stores, hardware stores, nurseries and big box retailers are filled with pumpkins for sale. But there are plenty of opportunities to visit a farm and pick your own, enjoying a day in the country to boot.
Here are some pick-your-own pumpkin places to explore.
ALLEN COUNTY
Suter Produce: You can buy pumpkins already pulled from the patch, or take a ride in a wagon to the patch and pick one yourself. Saturday mornings, the cider press is in operation from 7- a.m. Apples, apple cider, broccoli, pumpkins, corn cannon, snacks and refreshments are for sale. Tractor-pulled hay rides available Saturdays and Sundays, 1-6 p.m. The corn maze is open Saturdays and Sundays, 1-8 p.m. This year s theme is Pirate Trails and Treasure II. 12200 Pandora Road, Pandora. 419-384-3331.
DeHavens Home and Garden Showplace: Although there s no pumpkin patch here, DeHavens hosts popular Pumpkin Days during the fall, with hay rides, pony rides, a spooky walk-through, pumpkin decorating, entertainment and all-day karaoke. The last Pumpkin Day is Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. 775 Shawnee Road, Lima. 419-227-7003.
HARDIN COUNTY
Althausers Pumpkin Patch: Ornamental corn, gourds and seasonal decorations for sale, too. Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. 10718 Township Rd 205, five miles east of Kenton. 419-673-0637.
HANCOCK COUNTY
Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation: Ride the Pumpkin Train to the Pumpkin Patch to pick your own pumpkin, or just ride the train. No pumpkin purchase is necessary. Rides are 2 for adults and 1 for children. Pumpkins, 5. There is also a corn maze that is appropriate for children. MERCER COUNTY
Menchhofer Farms: Along with pumpkins, the farm sells apples, apple cider, maple syrup and baking mixes from Cassie s Country Cupboard. Tractor and horse-drawn wagon rides available. On their Facebook page, John and Cheri Menchhofer say their animals especially love visitors. Open Friday, 5 p.m.-dusk; Saturday, 1 p.m.-dusk. 5679 Wabash Road, Coldwater. 419-942-1502.
VAN WERT COUNTY
Lincoln Ridge Farms: This huge farm, retail shop and event space has something for everyone every weekend through October during its Fall Mums Pumpkin Festival. There are haywagon rides to the pumpkin patch, games such as Punkin Chunkin, Straw Mountain with a tunnel slide and zip line, gem stone mining, candle dipping, a Hootmobile Car Trail, a corn maze and a family friendly, spooky barn.
